Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island Residents
Residents in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island can now request a free brown bin for Curbside Composting. The deadline to request a free bin is October 28, 2024.
Only one free bin is provided per building.

All orders that were placed by August 31, 2024 were delivered before October 6, 2024. Any orders placed after September 1, 2024 will continue to be delivered on a rolling basis.

Bin Not Received
Please note that the free DSNY brown bin is not required for curbside compost disposal.
You can use any labeled bin (max: 55 gallons) with a secure lid. You can line your bin with a clear plastic, paper, or compostable bag to help keep it clean.
Order a free Composting Bin Decal for your bin online at nyc.gov/CompostingBinDecal.
Official NYC Bins for compost are also available for purchase but are not required.
Replacement Bins
DSNY does not provide free replacement brown bins.
Kitchen Compost Containers
You can use any bag or container to collect food scraps, food-soiled paper, and plant waste within your home. You can store food scraps in the freezer to prevent odors.
Once the bag or container is full, empty the scraps from your home into your building's compost bin.
Kitchen Container Giveaways
DSNY will host community events to educate the public about curbside composting. You can get a free kitchen container for food scraps at these events.
Kitchen containers are first come, first served, and limited to 1 per attendee.
