Beginning November 12, 2024, all New York City properties with 1-9 residential units must use a bin (55 gallons or less) with a secure lid for trash disposal.

Beginning June 2026, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use the official NYC Bin for trash disposal.

Although official NYC Bins for recycling and composting are available for purchase, they will not be required. Learn more about these bin requirements on the Residential Waste Containerization page.

You can:

  • Request a free compost bin from Department of Sanitation (DSNY) if you are a Bronx, Manhattan, or Staten Island resident
  • Purchase an official NYC bin for trash, recycling, and/or compost disposal

    Bin Not Received

Please note that the free DSNY brown bin is not required for curbside compost disposal.

You can use any labeled bin (max: 55 gallons) with a secure lid. You can line your bin with a clear plastic, paper, or compostable bag to help keep it clean.

Order a free Composting Bin Decal for your bin online at nyc.gov/CompostingBinDecal.

Official NYC Bins for compost are also available for purchase but are not required.

    Replacement Bins

DSNY does not provide free replacement brown bins.

    Kitchen Compost Containers

You can use any bag or container to collect food scraps, food-soiled paper, and plant waste within your home. You can store food scraps in the freezer to prevent odors.

Once the bag or container is full, empty the scraps from your home into your building's compost bin.

    Kitchen Container Giveaways

DSNY will host community events to educate the public about curbside composting. You can get a free kitchen container for food scraps at these events.

Kitchen containers are first come, first served, and limited to 1 per attendee.
