The New York City Noise Code aims to decrease noise from construction sites, motorcycles, "boom cars," air conditioners, nightclubs, refuse collecting vehicle, and other sources.

The code also imposes limits on excessive or unusually loud animal sounds. Dogs may not bark continuously for more than 10 minutes from 7 AM to 10 PM, or continuously for more than 5 minutes from 10 PM to 7 AM. In addition, ice cream vendors cannot play their jingles when stopped on a street.
