New York City's Open Streets program transforms streets into open public space.

Open Streets feature activities that promote economic development, support schools, and provide the public with opportunities to enjoy cultural and community programs.

Limited Local Access streets allow pedestrians and cyclists to use the street.

No through traffic is permitted while Open Streets are in effect, and limited local vehicle access is allowed for:

  • Parking*
  • Picking up/dropping off
  • Local deliveries
  • Emergency vehicles
  • Access-A-Ride
  • Utility vehicles
  • Necessary city service vehicles

*When Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations are in effect, drivers must move their vehicles from the street, and may return when ASP is over.

Drivers are advised to be extremely cautious and to drive 5 MPH or slower on these Open Streets.

Full Closure streets allow for car-free activities, such as outdoor dining and community programming.

Full Closure: Schools streets allow public, private, and charter schools to support drop off/pick up, recess, and outdoor learning activities.

Vehicles and parking are not allowed when Full Closures are in effect. All Full Closure streets must maintain a clear 15-foot emergency lane for emergency vehicle access.

You can ask questions, provide feedback, and report issues with Open Streets, including missing barriers, by contacting the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Dozens of Open Streets, plazas, and other corridors across New York City will have "Trick or Streets" Halloween activities.

These spaces will allow families more public space and recreation in celebration of Halloween.

Trick-or-Street locations, times, and events are available online.
